I started volunteering at Willow Wood almost eight years ago. As I am a very keen gardener I decided to join, what was then, a very small team of gardeners, with me included six in all. Now over the years the number has risen to a total of seventeen.
Being in the gardening groups we are under the guidance of Sophie the landscape designer of the present garden. We cover all aspects of gardening and I, in particular, concentrate of the propagating side of things. We raise plants from cuttings or from seeds collected in the garden. These new plants are eventually planted back into the gardens, and any surplus plants we sell at our Summer Fete in July.
Being a volunteer at Willow Wood is like being part of a very large family and the gardening group in particular is a very happy and friendly team. As well as enjoying the gardening it is very satisfying to see both patients, their families and friends plus the Hospice staff wandering around the gardens and enjoying the beauty and tranquillity which the gardens provide.
Volunteering is extremely rewarding and I would recommend it to anyone who has some time to spare and wishes to meet lots of new people who do, over time, become good friends.
