Latest Dementia Carers Support Cafe
Our café to support both carers and those with dementia goes from strength to strength.
Willow Wood’s Dementia Carers Support Café is open to any carers of those living with dementia every third Friday of the month, between 2.00pm – 3.00pm.Held at the Hospice itself, the aim is to give past and present carers the opportunity to relax with others in the same position, to share experiences and to obtain advice and support from specialist dementia nurse Ann Regan.
Ann was instrumental in setting up Willow Wood’s dementia care service, which won an “Innovation in Clinical Practice Award” at the 2013 Help for Hospices Awards. Its aim is to enhance the care for dementia patients and to reach out to educate and support both professional carers and families alike.
She sees the café as an important extension of this service. As Ann says “We’ve found that one of the most valuable aspects of the café is that carers and their charges can spend some quality time together here. They can relax over a homemade scone or slice of cake and unwind in a non-judgemental atmosphere and just feel comfortable together.Of course, help and advice is at hand should they need it.”
Ann is not the only one to offer support at the café.Each month there is a trainee solicitor present who can advise on any of the legal issues which can and do arise when a loved one has dementia. As with all of Willow Wood’s services, there is no charge for this, and it can be the ideal opportunity to talk over concerns about powers of attorney and other issues which may affect families now or in the future.
Trained volunteers are also present to offer advice and encouragement, or just to have a friendly chat.Everyone is welcome to attend either by themselves or with the one they are caring for. There is no need to book, although if you would like to find out a little more about the Café then please ring 0161 330 1100 and ask to speak to Ann or to a member of her team.
