Latest Complementary Therapies at Willow Wood

Here at Willow Wood the focus is on treating the whole person and we use complementary therapies alongside more conventional medical treatments. This holistic approach helps with relaxation and can provide a sense of wellbeing which in turn helps with both physical and emotional symptoms.

Our trained staff and volunteers use aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and Reiki and these are offered not only to our Day Service users, Inpatients and at our outpatient clinics, but also to patient’s families and their carers.

Pat Hunter, complementary therapy lead, says “Receiving a therapy gives you time to yourself, time to relax and time to de-stress. Some of our treatments may help with pain, and they certainly promote a feeling of well-being, which in turn can aid with sleep problems and anxiety. We don’t just treat the patient either, it is very important that their family and carers are able to make use of these therapies through what can be a very difficult time.”

Treatments can last for up to 45 minutes, but depending on the therapy used shorter sessions can be equally as beneficial. All our therapy rooms are warm and comfortable and usually have relaxing music playing in the background. Prior to any therapy everyone is assessed individually to ensure that they are getting the best possible treatment for their needs, and a full explanation of the treatment is given.

Willow Wood is also looking for additional volunteer complementary therapists to join the team. As Pat says, "A massage or aromatherapy treatment can really lift the spirits, and it's wonderful to see the difference they can make. If you're fully qualified and can offer us a few hours each week, either ring me for an informal chat or get in touch with Mandy McDermott, our Hospice & Community Volunteer Manager. We can both be reached on 0161 330 1100."
