Latest Changes at Willow Wood

Opening of new Day Services at Willow Wood

Willow Wood has always been at the forefront of Hospice care, and are rightly proud of that. However, as time moves on, so does the care offered and to reflect the changes being made newly appointed Day Services Lead, Nicky Byrne, has been working hard with all members of the team to maximise the potential of the new Day Services at Willow Wood.

One of the first, and most noticeable changes, is that patients will no longer attend for a full day and this of course opens up Willow Wood’s care to many more people. Following an initial assessment everyone will have their own personal timetable, to meet their own specific needs. Care plans will be tailor made to fit each individual so could include different clinical sessions, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation but could also include arts and crafts sessions, group therapies, complementary therapies and more. This holistic approach has long been a mainstay of the Hospice care, but the new developments will help ensure that more people are helped in Day Services and that care can continue as long as it is needed

Nicky, who has a wealth of experience in this area, comments “As we become more patient centred we can approach everyone’s need in a very targeted way. As those needs change so our response will change to ensure the best possible care at every stage of their journey.”

This patient centred approach is extremely flexible; plans include the introduction of more physically active sessions such as Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga which will complement existing therapies such as Reiki, Reflexology and massage. The extremely popular Looking Good, Feeling Better sessions will be developed because as Nicky says “Having a facial or manicure in a calm, secure environment can have many benefits, psychologically as well as physically. Here at Willow Wood we are mindful that we’re treating the whole person, and our aim is to help them to achieve their fullest potential”.

Other services will be coming on board over the coming months as Willow Wood strives to maintain its position as a leader in the Hospice field, and to ensure that all patients are treated with dignity, respect and loving care.
